Today was a fun ride with nothing but tail winds, 360 degree views, turqoise waters, and gorgeous bike trails. All in all, an awesome ride!
Along the path were thousands of these giant iguanas. I mean a LOT of them. They kept zipping into the woods about 15 yards in front of the bicycle and some were huge. It’s neat to see such exotic wildlife in this tropical climate.
After a couple extended stops to deal with city business over the phone, I eventually made my way down to the Sea Turtle Hospital, an old motel with a pool converted into a giant turtle sanctuary built to provide medical care, maintain, release, and house injured Sea Turtles. The founder happened to have extensive roots in DeBary and told me some intersting stories I haven’t ever heard.
It was quite sad looking in all the different tubs but the medical advancements they’ve made over the years is making a big difference in the survival rates of these creatures. Apparently, there’s a very specific tumor that is expanding through the population with somewhat unknown causes. Pollution is the likely culprit.
It is a top notch facility and very well maintained by passionate people like my tour guide, Bette. It was a pleasure to visit and experience their work. These turtles are surprisingly gentle and graceful creatures.
From there I had to attend a city meeting via Skype so I went to a place I’ve seen many times but never visited, the “Sunset Grill & Raw Bar” at the very very southern point of Marathon Key just at the 7 mile bridge who graciously offered me a quiet table and cold drinks. Still have no idea where I’ll sleep tonight but with only 1 day of riding left ahead of me, I could really care less. Might just layout in this heavy sea breeze and konk (heh) out. The finish line is near!
